The Ministry's letter had found her in Caracol, working as a harbor surveyor and paying for bad wine with worse company. She read it three times. Then she folded it into a boat and floated it in her glass, and watched it sink before she answered. "Tell them yes," she said to the courier. The courier hesitated. "The full commission includes a — co-lead. The Ministry insists on it." Elena looked up from the sinking letter. "Who." The courier placed a second document on the table. She saw the name at the top and felt something rearrange itself in her chest, not painfully, but with the finality of a door being closed. "Absolutely not," she said. Tell them I will do this alone, in less than six months, starting from the coast of their choosing. Tell them I will eat my compass before I share a tent with Rodrigo Vasquez." She paid for the wine and left. She made it three streets before she stopped walking. The uncharted territory. Four expeditions had attempted it. None had returned. But Rodrigo had been on the third expedition — the one that had, famously, come back with nothing but two survivors and a story no one believed. He had come back from the border. She turned around.
